TSI118  INTRODUCTION TO THEOLOGICAL METHOD: I (A.Y. 2025/2026)

Objectives: To (1) introduce students to the study of theology and assist students in understanding the material taught in the first year; (2) foster a deeper understanding of theological method, (3) teach students how to engage in research, and (4) encourage them to begin thinking theologically.

Learning outcomes:  Students will (1) acquire deeper knowledge of the nature, structure, and task of theology, (2) develop their capacity to engage in theological expression, (3) integrate material from the prescribed courses of the First Cycle into their theological reflection, and (4) learn how to do research with the resources of the Library and to write according to the norms of the Gregorian University.

Contents: The first semester provides a panoramic view of fundamental theology and considers the constitutive roles of Scripture, Tradition, and the Magisterium in theological study. Specific attention will be given to how these elements shape the study of Christology. The second semester continues this approach by considering questions of trinitarian and moral theology.

Methodology : Each class entails a presentation of key themes and questions from the readings, followed by guided discussion.

Means of evaluation : Students write a weekly one-page paper on the readings and come prepared to engage in discussion. Each student also makes one in-class presentation per semester. At the end of the second semester, students will submit an essay of at least 2500 words.
