EV4260  ISAIAH AND UNITY (A.Y. 2025/2026)

Description

The book of Isaiah houses ample attestations to Hebrew poetic brilliance. That such a brilliance in form is matched by rich content adds to the persuasive force of this mega prophetic corpus. The content itself dwells on significant theological themes such as creation, exodus, exile, monotheism, kingship, servant(s), etc. All the same, since the ground-breaking works of critical scholarship, the book’s unity—or the lack thereof—continues to elicit scholarly interests and debates.

With an aim to grow in exegetical appreciation of the book’s form, content and unity, the course Isaiah and Unity will (i) begin by familiarizing oneself with the socio-cultural contexts of Isaiah, (ii) pay particular attention to its literary-rhetorical features, (iii) note how salient theological themes are communicated through those features and (iv) adumbrate their imports for the contexts—both ancient and ours!

Course objectives:

1. To build on the basic knowledge of the content and the current scholarly trends of the book of Isaiah, particularly the concept of and the debates on its unity.

2.  Applying exegetical tools to shed light on (i) socio-historical contexts, (ii) literary-rhetorical aspects and (iii) their implication for outlining some salient theological messages.

3.  To these ends, each student will choose a text, continuously journey with it, and compose a short exegetical paper.

4.  The course will include guest lectures by some of the contributors of Unity in the Book of Isaiah, 2024, which will inform the post-lecture student activities.
