EN5127 EXEGESIS AND TRANSLATION OF THE LETTERS TO TIMOTHY AND TITUS (THE PASTORAL LETTERS) (A.Y. 2025/2026)

Description
This course will take students through a careful reading of the Greek text of the letters to Timothy and Titus. This year, we will concentrate on the exegesis of 2 Timothy (and selected passages in Titus and 1 Timothy), taking into account matters of interest for translation. A framework for considering these topics will first be constructed by means of (1) an introduction to recent developments in the study of the PE and (2) and by locating Bible translation within translation studies. Among topics to be considered are intertextuality and Christology in relation to the reception of these letters.
Objectives
(1) To increase fluency in reading and competency in exegesis of these NT documents.
(2) To appreciate the activity and theory of Bible translation as a component of the larger discipline known as Translation Studies.
(3) To understand, through exegesis and dialogue, the phenomenon of intertextuality and its relation to current perceptions of the PE in relation to the other Pauline letters.
(4) To ask the questions, resulting from exegesis, about the functions and goals of translation for the present-day churches in the world.
Method
The course will employ a combination of pedagogical methods. Mini-lectures (with discussion) will be used to introduce important elements of background, trends in interpretation, and Bible translation within the framework of translation studies. A seminar format will be employed to facilitate engagement in and discussion of the Greek text.
Evaluation
1. Students will read and produce a critique of two short articles to be chosen by the professor (to be submitted at the time of the examination).
2. A final examination will be administered at the end of the course that will focus on matters of exegesis, intertextuality, and the translation the Greek text of the Letters.
