Catherine Brown Tkacz, Silent Victim or Articulate Heroine? Susanna of the Old Testament

Abstract - Although recent scholars have called Susanna a silent victim, her biblical account and centuries of Christian commentary belie this. The only woman whose education the Bible describes, she was cited by Church Fathers to remind parents to educate their daughters as well as their sons. Susanna knew the Scriptures so well that she could paraphrase King David when courageously refusing the Elders, as various sermons point out. Repeatedly the biblical author applies to Susanna Scriptures written in the masculine generic; e.g., a psalm verse about the Blessed Man (Ps 111/112:7) is used to describe her confidence in the Lord during her trial. After she had been falsely condemned, the Lord responded immediately to her prayer. Her invocation of God as eternal and omniscient was praised in both East and West. Not only was she herself providentially delivered; her resistance to the Elders led to their exposure by the young Daniel and to their execution, thus saving the entire community from incurring guilt for wrongly executing her. Thus her actions led to the restoration of wholesome order within her community.

Valentín Goldie, De sociedad piramidal a koinonía sinodal: pasos dados y (todavía) no dados en el Sínodo de Obispos (2021-2024)

Abstract - This article analyzes the final document of the Synod of Synodality (2021-2024) as part of a long ongoing process of conversion of the Church from a pyramidal society to a synodal koinonia. It argues that the synod is party the reception of a theological corpus developed in ecumenical dialogue in recent decades, motivated, at least partially, by criticism and self-criticism of the Church´s own governance as a facilitator of the culture of sexual abuse. The article concludes that while the synodal text has taken important steps, the true magnitude of the reforms will be reflected or not in the reform of the Code of Canon Law. As an inspirational source, the synodal text allows for minimalist readings that would generate very few changes in the life of the Church, or it allows for much deeper readings that would generate a radical change in the dynamics of how the Church functions.

Luis Javier García-Lomas Gago OSB, Narrante Unigenito: William of Saint-Thierry’s Logic of the Incarnation

Abstract - This paper explores William of Saint-Thierry’s reception of the Nicene doctrine, especially the concept of consubstantiality, and its implications for Trinitarian theology and the logic of the Incarnation. In dialogue with Abelard’s theology, William reaffirms the Nicene faith and articulates a personalist and narrative vision of the Incarnation as a divine self-revelation. Through the concept of ratio fidei—reason enlightened by faith—William proposes that theological language is made possible by God’s gift of revelation in Christ. The Incarnation becomes not only a historical event but a fundamental condition for the knowledge of God and the transformation of human reason and will. Christ, as the Mediator and divine Wisdom, enables humanity to know and love God, thus restoring the broken relational dynamic through humility and love. This study highlights how William’s thought, deeply rooted in monastic spirituality and Augustinian legacy, offers a profound theological anthropology and a soteriology centered on the loving logic of divine self-giving.

Abstract - The essay recalls the main biblical and traditional data on divine indwelling. It stresses the personal role of the Holy Spirit as Witness of the loving embrace and dialogue between Father and Son (Thesis 1). The spiritual adoration with a eucharistic dynamic (Thesis 2). A peculiar expression of this interior worship is the incessant prayer in the Holy Spirit “Jesus! - Abbà!” (Thesis 3).

Johannes Stoffers S.I., Eine Frage des richtigen Standpunkts: Hinweise in Schellings „Propädeutik der Philosophie“

Abstract - In his Propaedeutics of Philosophy, Friedrich Wilhelm Joseph Schelling attempts to introduce into his systematic philosophical conception. On the one hand, a passage through the history of philosophy, at the end of which his own position finds its place, serves this purpose. On the other hand, the author shows what fundamental meaning there is in pursuing philosophical questions. In this context, he explains which attitude – in thinking as well as generally in life – is appropriate for philosophizing. Schelling’s reflections on the latter point can also be of interest to those who practice philosophy today.

Paul Gilbert S.I., Une phénoménalité hors phénomène ?

Abstract - Continuing to develop his work, Emmanuel Falque responds in his book À la limite, published in 2025, to the criticism levelled at his major work from 2021, Hors phénomène. Is it possible to consider in phenomenology what is otherwise claimed to be “outside of phenomena”? The author shows that many of the great philosophers of recent centuries have recognised the need for this, but have not dared to go further, which is something he himself intends to do.

Victor M. Salas, Miguel Viñas, S.J. (1642-1718) on the Unity of the Conceptus Entis

Abstract - The present essay examines the late scholastic Jesuit thinker Miguel Viñas’s teaching on the univocal concept of being. Unlike important some Jesuit predecessors, especially Francisco Suárez and Pedro Hurtado de Mendoza, rejects analogy in favor of univocity. In fact, as I argue, his commitment to univocity unfolds from his consideration of being in terms of non-repugnance. All beings agree in the common ratio entis much in the same way that various species agree in a genus. In a move that departs from Duns Scotus, who himself famously defended univocity, Viñas actually regards being as itself a genus. But if being is a genus and thus univocal just like any other genus, it would seem that infinite being (i.e., God) is subordinate to some prior division of reality. I show how Viñas evades that conclusion and others that are theologically problematic for his Christian faith.

Leonardo de Rezende C. Fares, Epistemologia da Doutrina Cibernética: Do novo estatuto ontológico predicado aos artefatos

This article is dedicated to examining the epistemic foundations of cybernetic theory, which was introduced to the public in the last century as a “new general science”. The reason for revisiting this system of ideas is that it serves as the doctrinal pillar upon which some of the major issues of our time currently rest: transhumanism and the so-called “artificial intelligence”. What paths have human ideas taken to bring us to the point where, today, within prestigious academic circles, there are proposals to grant human rights to manufactured objects? In this endeavor, we will conduct an epistemological examination of this doctrine in order to ascertain the core convictions that underpin it. We must also scrutinize, both semantically and syntactically, the expressions and assertions employed in its concepts and predications, for which we will largely rely on the tools of classical metaphysics, particularly Aristotle’s ontology.
