Objectives: This course seeks to examine three approaches to biblical interpretation in comparative perspective: modern exegesis, patristic com‧mentary, and the midrashic tradition.

Learning Outcomes: Students will be able (a) to analyze selected bib‧lical texts using the methods of modern, patristic, and midrashic exegesis; (b) to recognize the distinctive contribution of each exegetical approach and to evaluate how their symphonic presentation can lead to a comple‧mentary understanding of the questions raised by the text and the interpre‧tative answers it invites.

Contents: Three central passages of the Old Testament/Hebrew Bible – the binding of Isaac (Gen 22), the account of David and Bathsheba (2 Sam 11–12), and Ps 2 – will be examined through the respective exeget‧ical traditions.

Methodology: Classroom-taught lessons with opportunity for discus‧sion with the three professors.

Means of evaluation: The examination will consist of a written exam structured around three questions, set and corrected by each of the three professors.
