TSS012  ST. IGNATIUS AND WOMEN: YESTERDAY AND TODAY (A.Y. 2026/2027)

Objectives: This course will explore allow participants to come to a deeper understanding of his spirituality and his relationship with women. By studying how select women's congregations embraced Ignatian spiritu‧ality in the past and how they live that spirituality today, participants will explore the perennial value of this spirituality for women. Finally, the course will offer practical insights into how to make Ignatian spirituality more accessible to women, especially in the context of guiding the Spiritual Exercises.

Learning outcomes: The participants will be able to present the role that women played in the early days of the Society of Jesus and how select religious congregations through the centuries have been influenced by St. Ignatius and his spirituality. They will also be able to present the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius in a way that makes them more accessible to women.

Contents: This seminar will explore in depth the 139 extant letters ex‧changed between St. Ignatius and women. Of these, 89 were written by him and 50 from women to him It will further explore select religious congre‧gations inspired by St. Ignatius and his spirituality and how to present his spirituality to women today.

Methodology: The seminar is designed to involve all participants on a weekly basis in reading and dialogue on select texts. It requires research and personal study; group work; presentations during the seminar and the writing of a research paper.

Means of evaluation: The final grade is determined by a combination of weekly assignments, a research paper and final presentation.
