Objectives: Students will learn about the influence of Ignatius of Loy‧ola’s own lived experiences and reflection on them as described in his Auto‧biography for his later teaching on discernment in his Rules for Discernment.

Learning outcomes: Students will understand and be able to articulate the way Ignatius’ own lived experiences and reflection on them as described in his Autobiography influenced what he would later write in the Rules for Discernment of Spirits. They will also be able to articulate how Ignatius’ teaching on discernment is relevant for discernment in their own life.

Contents: Students will read Ignatius’ Autobiography and historical and theological commentaries on it, with a focus on the relevance of Ig‧natius’ own lived experiences and reflections on them for the teaching on discernment he later developed in his Rules for Discernment.

Methodology: Class sessions will consist of class discussions and the professor’s lectures. Students will write 1-2 page papers occasionally to prepare for discussions and a final paper on how the course material was relevant for discernment in their life.

Means of evaluation: Students will be evaluated based on their par‧ticipation in class discussions, their shorter papers and a final paper.
