Objectives: To provide students with a systematic understanding of Ignatian concepts and key theological terms. The course aims to present the Spiritual Exercises as a living tradition that continues to shape spiritual practices in contemporary settings.
Learning outcomes: To provide students with a systematic under‧standing of the theological foundations and the historical development of the Spiritual Exercises. The course aims to present the Ignatian tradition and its enduring significance and potential.
Contents: This course explores the Spiritual Exercises as a founda‧tional tradition of Christian spirituality. After a brief historical introduction to Ignatius of Loyola, we will examine the text’s internal structure as a guided theological process. Key focus areas include the theological foun‧dations of discernment and the anthropological dynamics of election, fo‧cusing on how these shape the retreatant's perception of God. A central question is the relationship between fidelity to the original charism and the necessity of contextual adaptation.
Methodology: The course consists of lectures combined with mo‧ments of individual reflection, group work, and active participation in class discussions.
Means of evaluation: Assessment consists of a short paper on a topic related to the Spiritual Exercises, chosen in consultation with the lecturer, followed by an oral examination.
