Description
This corso speciale will offer the students an opportunity to take part in two-weeks of excavation as part of a major archaeological expedition in the southern Levant (currently The Lautenschläger Azekah Expedition, headed by Tel Aviv and Heidelberg universities).
Objectives
The course aims to give the students a basic experiental knowledge of the archaeological process in a scientific excavation, to provide provide critical insight on the use of archaeology in biblical research.
Method
The course consists of two-weeks of excavation as part of an international team, supplemented by lectures and site visits. Students will be expected to take part fully in the life of the excavation, adjusting to the intense rhythm and hard work required, and to an intternational group coming from various cultures, religious traditions, and different levels of commitment to their faith (or none).
Rerequisites
Students will need to have already done their required courses for archaeology and geography, history of the Old Testament, and history of the New Testament. The course will be offered to a very restricted number, who will be chosen by interview.
Evaluation
There will be ongoing assessment of the students during the excavation experience, and a final written report focusing on the site and the assigned area of excavation.
