The Pontifical Gregorian University continues —together with the Pontifical Universities of Rome —its educational commitment to the Joint Diploma in Integral Ecology. The diploma offers a comprehensive vision of integral human development, grounded in two inseparable principles expressed in Laudato si’ and Magnifica Humanitas: care for our Common Home and the promotion of the dignity of every human person. The integration of these two documents provides a theological and ethical framework capable of uniting integral ecology, integral human development, social justice, responsible technological innovation, and spiritual renewal. It promotes a culture of care, in which the safeguarding of creation, respect for the dignity of the human person, and ethical discernment regarding new technologies converge into a single vision of hope, responsibility, and the common good.

The Joint Diploma program takes place over the course of one academic year (November–June). Each of the six modules is divided into two subtopics to cover all areas related to current ecological challenges—from theology to philosophy, from economics to sociocultural and political issues, and from scientific analysis to faith and spirituality.

In addition to the lectures, students are required to attend the scheduled conference and workshop.

Target Audience and Requirements

The Joint Diploma is intended for students from the various pontifical faculties and higher institutes of religious studies; members of various religious orders and congregations; and priests from the Diocese of Rome and beyond.

The Joint Diploma is also open to catechists, pastoral workers in various parishes, youth group leaders, volunteers, social and cultural workers, intercultural and communication mediators, and anyone interested in deepening their awareness of caring for our Common Home and promoting human dignity.

A Bachelor's degree or even a High School Diploma is required.

Enrolment Fees

The registration fee is €110 for students already enrolled in a pontifical faculty participating in the initiative, and €350 for non-enrolled students.

Dates and timetables

Classes will be held on the second Thursday of each month from 3:00 p.m. to 6:15 p.m. Students must also participate in a roundtable discussion and a workshop focused on research into the themes of Laudato si’ and Magnifica Umanitas, as well as write a short term paper on one of the topics covered during the classes.
The Joint Diploma concludes with a final exam (Lectio coram).
