Licentiate in Moral Theology

When studying Moral Theology at the licentiate level, Gregorian University students are taught to appreciate and focus on the fundamental categories which ground moral discourse. This method puts the students in a position to face major ethical issues with a critical mindset, enabling them to appraise a plurality of approaches.

To obtain the licentiate degree, students must obtain 120 ECTS, while also meeting the following requirements:

  1. take and pass the examination of a minimum of 16 courses (≈16x3 ECTS):
  • This entails a mix of Core Courses or “Propri”, Interdepartmental Courses or “Comuni”, and Electives or “Opzionali”);
  • 9 Core Courses and 3 Interdepartmental ones are required;
  • To reach a total of 16, one may add 2 more Interdepartmental Courses (max. 5), Electives (max. 4), and as many Core Courses as desired;
  1. attend and complete the coursework of 3 seminars (one per semester in the first three semesters), of which TMS001 is mandatory in the first semester (total = 12 ECTS);
  2. attend and complete the special course TM0001 (dissertation preparation) and hand in the dissertation (0+30 ECTS)
  3. attend and complete the special course TM0002 (final exam preparation) and pass the final exam of the licentiate (0+30 ECTS)

Students may begin writing their licentiate dissertation after choosing a professor of the Department as a moderator and having received the approval of the Coordinator of the Specialization in Moral Theology.
