Licentiate in Moral Theology

The Licentiate in Moral Theology (STL) at the Pontifical Gregorian university, with its rich post-conciliar tradition, emphasises academic quality and the relevance of the courses offered, as well as personal attention to students. Starting from a core set of courses integrated into a balanced and well-designed programme, students are free to build their own path, taking advantage of the offerings of our nine faculties and various institutes and centres, as well as other Roman ecclesiastical faculties.

Programme Structure

To obtain the academic degree, students must earn 120 ECTS credits and complete 3 compulsory courses (TM0000, TM0001, TM0002). Half of the 120 ECTS credits are obtained by attending and passing exams in:

  • 16 courses, chosen from among the Faculty's own courses, common courses and optional courses, as follows: a minimum of 9 chosen from among the Faculty's own courses in Moral Theology; 3 to 5 chosen from the Common Courses of the Faculty of Theology; up to 4 chosen from the Optional Courses listed in the Specialisation programme (or from other programmes, including those of other Cruipro institutions, with the approval of the Coordinator);
  • 3 Seminars (one per semester in the first three semesters, including TMS001, which is compulsory).

The other half of the credits are awarded for passing the Final Licentiate Examination (30 ECTS) and submitting the Licentiate Thesis (30 ECTS), written under the supervision of a professor from the Department and approved by him. The moderator is chosen by the student with the prior consent of the Coordinator.

Those who have not attended the First Cycle at Pontifical Gregorian University may also take courses TP1022, TP1027, TP1032, TP1034, and TP1037.
