Renewal Program for Missionaries

General Information

Those who have been participating in the mission of the Church through various ministries often feel the need for theological and missiological updating, in order to respond more effectively to these challenges. The Specialization of Missiology of the Faculty of Theology seeks to respond to this need through the Renewal Program for Missionaries, a one-semester program in English for experienced missionaries and pastoral ministers seeking updating and renewal.

I. FOR WHOM:

1. The program is designed for lay people, religious, or priests who have already had pastoral or missionary experience.

2. A mastery of English is required on the part of potential participants, as well as a Bachelor’s degree in any discipline.

 

II. OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAM:

1. To provide theological and missiological updating, both with regard to contemporary understandings of mission, as well as concrete responses to various contextual challenges.

2. Taking advantage of the setting of the program in Rome, to offer guided visits to historical sites connected with mission, as well as encounters with people and groups engaged in mission in Rome and the Vatican.

3. To promote personal integration of past apostolic experience and new learnings, and reflection on future directions for mission and ministry.

4. To facilitate an experience of inter-cultural community with fellow participants from a diversity of backgrounds

 

III. FUNDAMENTAL COMPONENTS OF THE PROGRAM

1. Courses that focus on an updated understanding of various dimensions of mission

2. Seminars that promote learning through experiences, visits, encounters, dialogue and shared reflection

  • Seminar 1: Series of talks on selected issues related to mission (Among the topics: migration; safeguarding; laity and women in the Church; the digital world; synodality; etc.)
  • Seminar 2: Guided Visits (to historical sites, Vatican dicasteries, various centers of mission)
  • Seminar 3: Weekly shared reflection in sub-groups (under the guidance of a mentor).

 

IV. CERTIFICATE PROGRAM:

A Certificate in Missiology will be granted to those who attain 30 ECTS, which involves fulfilling the requirements (class attendance and participation, papers, final exams) for the following:

1. Six required courses (3 ECTS per course: 18 ECTS total)

2. Three seminars (3 ECTS per seminar: 9 ECTS total).

3. Final integration paper (3 ECTS).

For a Certificate of Participation, the above pre-requisites, namely exams and the final paper, are not necessary. The program takes place during the second semester of the academic year.
