- Rousselot, Maréchal, Lubac : Actualité des thomismes transcendantaux
Navigating the tension between (a) fidelity to a unified vision of the human being, knowledge and the cosmos – as proposed by Aristotle and subsequently integrated by Thomas Aquinas into the Creator-creature relationship – and (b) openness to events and individuals in their originality has been a central concern for generations of Jesuit philosophers and theologians.
From Francisco Suárez to Joseph Maréchal, via Lubac, Rahner, Lotz and Chapelle, in lively dialogue with the Dominican tradition (De Petter; the Angelicum), these Jesuit Thomists showcase a living tradition’s dynamism precisely because it is interpretative and explanatory, and updates its theses in light of new contexts. This conference will explore theis legacy’s resources in order to reflect today on the relations between faith and culture; philosophy and theology; and European traditions and non-Western thought.
