- LA «SPERANZA DI DIVENTARE PARTECIPI DELLA FELICITÀ»
As part of the philosophical workshop PRAGMATEIA, on the occasion of the third centenary of the birth of Immanuel Kant (1724-1804), the Faculty of Philosophy continues to pursue direct engagement with the classics of Western thought in a roundtable discussion on the ethical reflections of the German philosopher.
The concept of hope in the history of moral philosophy constitutes one of the most indispensable ones for comprehending in depth the foundation of ethical thought.
In this regard, the reflections of Immanuel Kant are decisive, who, from 1790 onward, dedicated the last efforts of his philosophical career to comprehending the rational hope in the realization of the good. Morality must make itself visible, be able to promise progress not utopian that knows how to unite freedom and the undeniable natural impulses of the human being. Hope in a mediation between nature and freedom: such is the challenge of Kant’s late ethics.
Spurred by the new Italian edition of Kant’s Elementi metafisici della Dottrina della virtù (1797), edited by Francesca Fantasia and Carmelo Alessio Meli, published by Mimesis, Milano – Udine 2024, the roundtable that we present here intends to engage with these themes and, with the help of experts in Kantian thought, will dwell upon more strictly foundational questions, to the point of touching topics in applied ethics and the philosophy of religion.
