La Realpolitik di Pio XI di fronte alla II Repubblica Spagnola

MIGUEL DIONISIO VIVAS

On Friday 21 March, in room F007, at 5 p.m., the fourth appointment of the annual cycle of the permanent seminar in History of the Papacy will be held. On this occasion Miguel Dionisio Vivas, from the Universidad Rey Juan Carlos in Madrid, will give a lecture entitled ‘The Realpolitik of Pius XI in the face of the Second Spanish Republic’. The researcher will focus on the relationship between the Holy See and Spain between 1931 and 1939. With the proclamation of the Second Republic in Spain, the Holy See had to face the consequences of a violent anticlerical policy. However, Rome did not welcome the new political model, which paradoxically allowed the Church greater freedom to function. Pius XI, through his Nuncio Tedeschini, implemented a Realpolitik that allowed Spanish Catholics to coexist with the republican system, with the aim of reversing the trend of state anticlericalism.
