IL DIRITTO D'ASILO

2025 marks the ninth edition of the Migrantes Foundation Report dedicated to asylum seekers and refugees, which this year is entitled Asylum seekers: imprisoned hopes.

It is a collaborative work, written by a team of authors who have chosen to adopt an empathetic and critical perspective, which is essential for interpreting the data, regulations, policies and stories they recount in the volume.

The awareness is that – at global, European and national level – international conventions and human rights are increasingly being violated, and with them the effective protection of the right to asylum is also progressively shrinking, while the number of people forced to flee around the world has now exceeded 123 million.

In this scenario, words change meaning: protection, cooperation and security increasingly become euphemisms that conceal practices of exclusion, suspension of rights and delegation of responsibility. Thus, what once would have seemed unacceptable becomes the “new normal”.

For this reason, with tenacity, the Migrantes Foundation Report once again attempts to present data on reality and responsibility, recognising itself in the horizon of meaning indicated by Pope Francis in his choice of theme for the 111th World Day of Migrants and Refugees (WDMF) in 2025, entitled Migrants, Missionaries of Hope, followed by the message of Leo XIV.
