Attraversare il Rubicone: Dalla Fenomenologia alla Teologia

At the end of the last century, French phenomenology was accused of having taken a turn toward theology. Religious themes such as prayer and liturgy entered the realm of phenomenology, as did specifically theological concepts like Resurrection and Revelation. Within this approach, an initial critique has emerged in recognizing the danger of a thought that, neglecting the metaphysical dimension, risks breaking out of the very boundaries of philosophy. Furthermore, within the field of phenomenology, while some have viewed this turn as a betrayal of the phenomenological project, others have seen in the theological transformation of phenomenology its highest fulfillment.

Emmanuel Falque confronts this paradox of contemporary French philosophy with the audacity to cross the Rubicon that mediates between philosophy and theology. The originality of his approach lies not only in crossing from one side to the other, but also in inhabiting the very edges of this Rubicon. He maintains that “the more one theologizes, the better one philosophizes.” Far from philosophies of the ‘leap,’ Falque advocates for a genuine encounter between phenomenology and theology, trusting that the two will become more clearly distinguishable the more fully they are embraced and assumed.

The aim of this Study Day is to introduce the work of Emmanuel Falque, with the privilege of welcoming him to our academic institution. It will be an opportunity to explore his unique perspective on the relationship between philosophy and theology, shedding light on his arguments and opening the door to fruitful dialogue between the two disciplines. Since philosophy is made of debates, we will also host one between Emmanuel Tourpe and Emmanuel Falque on this crossing of the Rubicon.
