Ancient Moral Philosophy (as a Way of Life)

According to Pierre Hadot, philosophy appears in its original aspect not as a theoretical construct, but as a method for training people to live and to look at the world in a new way: it is an attempt to transform mankind. In this workshop, two scholars will analyze some moral writings of two classical ancient authors, Plutarch of Chaeronea (1st-2nd century CE) and Porphyry of Tyre (3rd century CE), to try to understand to what extent the original aspect of philosophy as a way of life and self-transformation emerges in these writings.
