On Saturday, November 29, 2025, Fr. Karl Heinz Nuefeld, S.J., returned to the house of the Father. Born in Warendorf (Westphalia) on February 16, 1939, he entered the Society of Jesus in 1960.
He earned a doctorate in theology from the Faculty of Theology of Lyon-Fourvière (1975), spending a period as assistant to Fr. Karl Rahner, S.J., and a second doctorate in philosophy (1983) in Munich. From 1978 to 1989, he was a professor at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome, initially in fundamental theology, then in dogmatics. He actively participated in the publication of all of Karl Rahner's works and was director of the Karl Rahner Archive and editor-in-chief of the journal "Zeitschrift für Katholische Theologie" (Journal of Catholic Theology, ZkTh).
In 2007, he moved to Osnabrück, and in 2022, due to renovations at the seminary where he served as pastoral care and spiritual director, he moved to the Ursuline house, where he died following a serious stroke.
We accompany him with prayer, grateful for his generous service, and we remember him with the last lecture he gave at the Gregorian University on January 10, 2013, as a guest of the Faculty of Theology.
