The Historical Archives of the Pontifical Gregorian University present the exhibition “Further North Than Any Altar”, open from April 20 to 27 in the University’s Quadriportico and dedicated to documents related to the participation of Fr. Giuseppe Gianfranceschi, S.J., in the Italian polar expedition of 1928.
The Gianfranceschi Collection preserves extensive documentation on the scientific activity of the Jesuit priest and physicist, co-founder—together with Mario di Carpegna—of ASCI (the Italian Catholic Scouting Association), Rector of the Pontifical Gregorian University, and first director of Vatican Radio.
The exhibition features Gianfranceschi’s Diary Toward the North Pole—including enlarged reproductions of the many sketches that enrich it—as well as glass plate slides and a contemporary press review on Umberto Nobile’s polar expedition (1928).
