Objectives : This course, co-taught by a Jesuit priest and a Rabbi – both professors at the Pontifical Gregorian University – explores the concept of the plain meaning of Scripture ( peshat ) as pioneered by Rashi (1040–1105). It examines how his interpretative method shaped subsequent generations of Jewish and Christian exegetes, highlighting their evolving engagement with biblical texts.
Learning Outcomes : To teach students to read the Bible with Rashi in a critical way. To understand his method and his influence.
Content : The course begins with an in-depth study of Rashi’s revolutionary approach to biblical exegesis, analyzing his methodological innovations and exegetical principles. Through close readings of his commentaries, students will gain insight into his interpretative objectives and theological thought. Additionally, students will engage in comparative analysis, contrasting Rashi’s interpretations with those of later medieval Jewish and Christian scholars. Special attention will be given to the often-overlooked intellectual exchanges between these traditions, revealing a shared interpretative heritage and areas of influence.
Methodology : Students will participate in collaborative reading and discussion of selected biblical commentaries from Rashi and his school. Professors will provide historical and methodological context, fostering a dynamic, participatory learning environment. All texts will be available in English, with the original Hebrew provided for reference and deeper textual accuracy.
Means of Evaluation : the students will be asked to write a paper on one of the exegetical figures presented during the course.
