Objectives: To develop an advanced ecumenical understanding of the dogmatic similarities and differences in ecclesiology and the concept of Church unity across the Oriental and Occidental traditions.
Learning outcomes: Students will be able to: (a) critically examine the theological and doctrinal distinctions in ecclesiology and Church unity between the Oriental and Occidental traditions, (b) evaluate their historical and theological contexts, (c) analyse patristic perspectives, and (d) assess their significance for contemporary ecumenical dialogue.
Content: The official documents on various aspects of ecclesiology that have been mutually agreed upon by the Catholic Church (CC), the Oriental Orthodox Churches (OOC), and the Assyrian Church of the East (ACE); Ecclesiology, Ecumenism, Church Unity and Reformation in the Understanding of Protestantism and Anglican Tradition; Genesis of Modern Protestant Ecumenism and the formation of the World Council of Churches; Paradigm shifts in the understanding of Church unity in the modern ecumenical movement.
Methodology: Lectures, student presentations and seminar papers, and group discussions.
Criteria of evaluation: Oral or written exam, based on the student's preference.
