TRCS06  SPIRITUAL SEEING: PERCEIVING GOD IN SACRED SPACES (A.Y. 2025/2026)

Objectives: The course will introduce a Spiritual Seeing of sacred spaces in which the liturgy, the encounter with God, the realisation of the human being go hand in hand. The history of the theory of the Spiritual Seeing will be developed from the Antiquity to the Contemporary time. The course will also introduce the spiritual, theological and anthropological thought on realization in the encounter of man, God and the world in the sacred space. Planned site visits are part of the course and offer an experience of the perception of God in sacred spaces. At the end of the course students will reflect and share their knowledge and experience gained from the course.

Learning outcomes: Students are expected; To have a broad understanding of the varieties of expression in the history of the Spiritual Seeing; To have a good working familiarity with the standard vocabulary and terminology; To be familiar with a range of theoretical and methodological strategies for the study of perceiving God in Sacred Spaces, and to be capable of critical analysis; To be able to "read" and “understand” a sacred space by applying appropriate standard methods; To apply appropriate methods in approaching new and unfamiliar spaces; Promote autonomous thinking and seeing, thus contributing to the formation of men and women integrated in the heart, mind, body and spirit; To able to reach higher levels of knowledge of reality.

Contents: Can Spiritual Seeing help us to become what we really are from God? What is the history of the Spiritual Seeing from the Antiquity on? Does the difference between a sacred space, holy, religious or spiritual space has to do with our spiritual seeing? What is the role of aesthetics, prayer and spiritual seeing in Sacred Spaces? What is the relation between liturgy, metanoia and realization and spiritual seeing in the sacred space? The course explores answers to these questions in theory and praxes. The concepts of spiritual seeing will be developed theoretically from the antiquity to the present day and the process of the encounter of God will be accompanied in the sacred spaces themselves.

Methodology : There is a threefold structure of theory, visit and exchange. Students will provide written responses to assigned readings, which will serve as the basis for class discussion and a deeper comprehension.

Means of evaluation: These will include responses for each class (30%), one specific research on one topic (40%), and class participation/attendance (30%).
